About Phonix in a Box™

Phonix in a Box™ is a South African based company. It launched its first educational range of phonic cards in June 2008 which focuses on strengthening a learner’s spelling and reading skills through playing games in small groups in the classroom, therapy sessions and at home. The cards are designed to strengthen a learner’s ability to associate letters and sounds which will have a positive impact on his/her spelling and reading.

As more schools are becoming aware of the importance of becoming more inclusive of learners with special needs, there is a huge demand for good, phonic resources that can be used in small groups in the classrooms and in specialised therapy groups. These games are perfect for learning support teachers who provide extra support for
learners experiencing difficulties with literacy skills and for small remedial or speech therapy groups. They are also useful for parents who wish to strengthen their child’s reading and spelling at home.

By playing these games, a child will learn to:

  • Match sounds (phonemes) and written letters (graphemes)
  • Use strategies that will strengthen his/her reading and spelling skills.
  • Use strategies to visually recognise letter combinations and associate them to auditory sounds.
  • Develop good phonemic awareness skills.

There are 300 picture cards in the set which will also strengthen a child’s vocabulary skills.

The cards have been designed by a Speech-Language Therapist, who has been practising in the area of literacy and pre-literacy development for 15 years. Her knowledge and practical experience of literacy development and the strong link to phonemic awareness development has resulted in the development of these cards and she has tested these games in the classroom and small groups.
Her practice has been based at a private school in Johannesburg for 10 years and she has had experience in working with teachers and therapists in the school setting and classroom.

Children need to learn to recognise letter patterns or combinations (graphemes) and to link them to sounds (phonemes). These cards are designed to strengthen a child’s ability to associate letters and sounds which will have a positive impact on his/her spelling and reading.

These boxes include cards with consonant digraphs and the vowel sounds (phonemes) that occur in English, with the most common spelling choices (graphemes). For most graphemes there are four different full colour picture cards.

These games can be played in small groups in classrooms, in therapy settings and at home. They are designed for children from 6-12 years of age.
Each box consists of a pack of 60 cards, 6 joker cards and a set of instructions to play 5 different games.
